There are two days every year that I hate... May 28th, which is the day my first love died, and August 6th, which is the day my dad died.
I woke up today trying to not think about the fact that it was the 17th anniversary of the day my dad passed away. Leukemia SUCKS, by the way. It took my dad when he was only 46. That's WAY too young. So, trying to think about other things, I started scanning through some of my favorite websites that I read every morning. The first thing I saw? "Tony Stewart Breaks Leg in Sprint Car Race; Expected To Miss Cup Race at Watkins Glen."
What? Nooooooo! That was not exactly the news I wanted to read on a day where I only wanted to think happy thoughts!
Every race car driver knows that there is an inherent risk every time they get behind the wheel of a race car. They do it anyway for the passion of the sport. And Tony is a RACER. He didn't have to be racing a sprint car in Iowa last night. He did it because he loves racing, and his passion for the sport is exactly what I love most about him. I love passionate people. It's just such a shame to be hurt doing what you love. And he's been beat up recently racing sprint cars... he was in a huge pile up a few weeks back in New York, flipped one a week-or-so ago in Canada, and now this. He was involved in a crash while leading the race and ended up with a broken right tibia and fibula. The good news is that he was awake and alert when they took him out of the car. They rushed him to a local hospital where he had surgery.
There is no word yet on how long he will be out or who will drive his car this weekend at Watkins Glen. This is such a setback, considering he was out of the top 10 in points and there are only five races to go until the chase. Granted, he *may* have gotten in to the Chase with his Wild Card win or he *may* have climbed back in to the top 10 in points to be in the chase. Now, it's a waiting game and time will tell.
It's always sad to see a driver get hurt (or worse), no matter who the driver is. It's especially sad to see your favorite driver get hurt. I hope Smoke makes full recovery and is back giving 'em hell at the racetrack sooner than later.
Get well soon, Smoke!!!
